church organist and concert pianist. Advanced studies with Calvin B. Cady and Adolf Weidig, Chicago, harmony and counterpoint. Authority on Negro spirituals. Hill, William J. (Billy Hill), com­poser, author, b. Boston, Mass., July 14, 1899; d. Boston, Mass., Dec. 24, 1940. ASCAP 1929. Educ: Boston public schools; violin with Dr. Carl Muck. As youth traveled extensively through Far West; rode the range, worked with surveyors in Death Val­ley, played violin and piano in dance halls, said to have had first jazz orches­tra ol the Far West, in Salt Lake City. Augmented wages as doorman m New Yoik by occasional sales for nominal sums of original songs used on the "B" side of records. With pub­lication of "They Cut Down the Old Pine Tree," became songwriter. Songs.
